Monday Movies - Play It Again Sam

Feature Presentation...
MONDAY MOVIE MEME

This week Molly and Andy at the Bumbles Blog reflect on movie remakes after seeing an ad for the new remake of Friday The 13th. Most are cringe-inducing but, every now and then a remake is actually as good or better than the original.

Here are some remakes in my opinion that stand up to the originals:
  • 3:10 to Yuma (Russell Crowe & Christian Bale)
  • Cape Fear (Scorsese!)
  • The Fly (Cronenberg directs a young, buff Jeff Goldblum)
  • The Out-of-Towners (maybe it isn't better than the original but it has John Cleese)
  • The Quiet American (Michael Caine)
Is it the director? Is it a particular actor? The combination?

Good one! This was a fun meme -- I left my responses in the comments. The Fly was just so disgusting though... I remember feeling physically sick in the theater -- but I pretty much end up that way at any of Cronenberg's films. I can't remember what the one is called that had Jeremy Irons playing twins and they had these tortuous gynecological instruments but that bothered me for ages! I guess I've blocked the name of the that film out because of trauma!

Oh man, I'm glad I didn't see that other Cronenberg film! I already have issues with that sort of thing. I like Jeremy Irons though.

I remember liking the beginning of The Fly a lot.

Oh God - "Dead Ringers" is what Jenners is thinking of. Shudder still thinking about it - great performance though.

I had a feeling you would have Cape Fear as well. That was one of the rare situations where both the original and the re-make were very good.

Molly, I can see Scorsese deciding to remake a film but can you imagine someone deciding to remake a Scorsese film. Raging Bull? Never!

I did not really enjoy 3:10 To Yuma and I have not seen "The Quiet American".

Scorsese does like remakes - The Departed was a foreign film originally (Japanese I think?) - but it seems he mixed things up a bit and really just stuck to the overall theme - those kind of remakes seem to work better.

Shannon, every now and then I like a good shoot em up western. I thought Crowe's and Bale's acting was impressive. Very suspenseful at the end.

Thanks for stopping by.

I agree on 3:10 to Yuma and The Fly. I loved the Michael Caine versio of The Quiet American (and I read it first!) but never saw the first movie (not sure I remembered it was a remake.) I can't watch Cape Fear - too scary. and I've never seen The Out-of-Towners. I've not seen the orig Thomas Crown Affair but love the Rene Russo one.

guess that's my 2 cents.

Certainly with you on Cape Fear. Remakes that work as well as the original are so very rare.
