Friday Finds

What great books did you hear about / discover this week?

I found:

Still Alice by Lisa Genova

"With grace and compassion, Lisa Genova writes about the enormous white emptiness created by Alzheimer's in the mind of the still-too-young and active Alice. A kind of ominous suspense attends her gathering forgetfulness, and Genova puts us, sympathetically, right inside her plight. Somehow, too, she portrays the family's response as a loving one, and hints at the other hopeful, helpful response that science will eventually provide."
- Mopsy Kennedy, Improper Bostonian

I found this book via the Jan. 2009 Indie Next List.

What books said "read me" to you this week?

This sounds very intriguing ... but a bit depressing perhaps.

You know what's strange? I'm not concerned about the heaviness factor as much as I am about the overall quality of the writing. I read an excerpt (which you have to think is chosen to favorably promote the book) & thought the writing was "flat."

I'm attracted to the idea of the novel but worried that I will be disappointed in the writing.

Yes, I guess I first saw it in the Shelf Awareness ads, but then I was flying this last weekend and there were large numbers of copies displayed in the airport bookstores. I will have to get my hands on a copy at some point.
