Letter to the Editor about the looming Great Betrayal of the American people:

We, the Enemies?

The editorial “Debt & Taxes in DC” fails to mention proposed entitlement reforms that are being discussed in Washington right now. Cuts to Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid will devastate the poor and sick in this country. For people already living on the edge of financial ruin, taking away even a small percentage of their income is a recipe for disaster. And yet that’s what both parties are discussing.

In the interests of honesty, let’s call this what it really is: The US government is imposing economic sanctions on its own citizens. As we have done to populations in Iran and other “enemy states,” a huge segment of American citizens will be unable to afford decent food, shelter, or medical care if President Obama’s Grand Bargain/Great Betrayal includes cuts to the social safety net.

So millions of people who have been paying into the system for decades will not get what was promised when they could use it most. At least now we know how the richest nation in the world treats those in need – the same way it treats its enemies.

With one term down and one more to go, we take a look at how well the first Obama administration did on some of the issues OTM cares about most: surveillance, transparency, whistleblowers, and press access. A deficit created by ramming through a massive tax cut at a time when the U.S. was embroiled in two unnecessary wars. Obama should let the tax cuts expire. Will he? David Frum:

I believe the Republican Party is a party of followership. The problem with the Republican leaders is that they’re cowards….The real locus of the problem is the Republican activist base and the Republican donor base. They went apocalyptic over the past four years. And that was exploited by a lot of people in the conservative world. I won’t soon forget the lupine smile that played over the head of a major conservative institution when he told me that our donors think the apocalypse has arrived. Republicans have been fleeced and exploited and lied to by a conservative entertainment complex….Because the followers, the donors and the activists are so mistaken about the nature of the problems the country faces the nature–I mean, it’s just a simple question. I went to Tea Party rallies and I would ask this question: “have taxes gone up or down in the past four years?” They could not answer that question correctly. Now it’s true that taxes will go up if the President is re-elected. That’s why we’re Republicans. But you have to know that taxes have not gone up in the past. And “do we spend a trillion dollars on welfare?” Is that true or false? It is false. But it is almost universally believed. That means that the leaders have no space to operate.

Meanwhile, the president is in a far stronger position than in previous confrontations. I don't place much stock in talk of "mandates," but Obama did win re-election with a populist campaign, so he can plausibly claim that Republicans are defying the will of the American people. And he just won his big election and is, therefore, far better placed than before to weather any political blowback from economic troubles -- especially when it would be so obvious that these troubles were being deliberately inflicted by the GOP in a last-ditch attempt to defend the privileges of the 1 percent.

Most of all, standing up to hostage-taking is the right thing to do for the health of America's political system.

While driving to meet him in Reno, I thought about this blog and whether it's time to pull the plug. I'm still mulling this. Is this normal? If you have a blog, do you sometimes wonder why you have one?

Getting back to the hike...didn't see another hiker until the end. It was a guy who said he is preparing to hike to the top of Mt. Whitney this weekend. All of a sudden I thought "I should set a goal of hiking to the top of Whitney." Just like that. What?! Why am I so impressionable?

Guess I'm feeling a little adrift these days. End of summer melancholy perhaps.

[Photo - Hunter Creek, Reno, Nevada]Eidinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05566699879765071839noreply@blogger.com9tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15150089.post-54356827592822589482010-09-11T21:51:00.000-07:002010-09-12T19:28:07.840-07:00birds on a wire

Eidinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05566699879765071839noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15150089.post-14856626257567700762010-09-05T09:21:00.000-07:002010-09-12T19:48:37.222-07:00Quotable - amazing grace

<td style="color: #b2b7f2; font-family: "Times New Roman", serif; font-size: 35px; font-weight: bold; padding-bottom: 10px; padding-left: 10px; padding-right: 10px; padding-top: 10px; text-align: left;" valign="top" width="20">“

Of all my books, Amazing Grace means the most to me. I hope you all enjoy reading this book as much as I did.Eidinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05566699879765071839noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15150089.post-1321293818803743492010-08-26T12:35:00.000-07:002010-08-26T12:37:09.076-07:00Coming this Fall - a tawdry tale

On sale November 2nd.

Like real cupcakes, I don't think I'll be able to resist this book:

Sure, cupcakes are all sweet when they’re all dolled up for birthday parties, but what happens when the wrapper comes off? This deliciously funny book gives you a behind-the-scenes look at the wild and tawdry lives of Desperate Cupcakes. You’ll meet insecure cupcakes like Sally, who wraps herself in bacon to bring the sizzle back into her relationship. Follow these cupcakes to the dark side as they experience sugar rushes and crashes, succumb to snack attacks, and engage in ill-advised activities (like riding with the Hells Angel Cakes.) You’ll delve into their fears, their woes, and their fierce suspicion of muffins. Ultimately, you’ll discover how truly difficult it is to be everyone’s favorite dessert.
I suspected a competitive relationship between cupcakes & muffins, but never "fierce suspicion."

BTW - Last day to enter to win one of three copies of the perfect late summer read "One Day" by David Nicholls.Eidinhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05566699879765071839noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15150089.post-29981341287955969702010-08-25T12:45:00.000-07:002010-08-31T12:07:01.622-07:00See this film - At the Death House Door

"At the Death House Door" is an IFC original documentary following Carroll Pickett's 16 year transformation from prison chaplain in Huntsville, Texas to outspoken anti-death penalty crusader.
